The Smiths Medial Global Strategy & Transformation team supports the business in making key strategic decisions, and implementing the strategic initiatives, that drive Smiths' growth. 

The team pursues many strategic objectives including: 

  • Lead strategic planning as well as identifying and pursuing inorganic opportunities in the interest of creating a leading portfolio.
  • Deliver Market Intelligence data, analysis, information and insights to help business leaders make more informed strategic decisions. 
  • Partner with Smiths' teams to manage the implementation of key strategic initiatives via the Strategic Program Management Office, helping to achieve results through focused and well-structured actions. 
  • Optimize project and program management processes within the team and across other functional areas of the business.

Global Operations

Global Operations covers 5 essential segments of supply namely manufacturing, supply chain planning, logistics, sourcing and engineering. Operations has critical and valued partnerships with Quality, R&D and Marketing to ensure we maintain effective and efficient supply of our current products globally. We also build new supply chains for the next generation of innovative products our customers want. All groups act in a collaborative and cohesive way to get the right products to the right customers when they want them at a price they are willing to pay.

Those products are made by people who passionately care about the job they do and deliver from an effective and efficient capability that is socially responsible and has minimal environmental impact.

  • Manufacturing: Fourteen globally distributed manufacturing plants produce high volume and high quality products.
  • Supply Chain Planning: Delivers a competitive advantage through the service we provide to our customers by driving leaner, reliable, and appropriately flexible processes in each step of the supply chain while reducing cycle time and optimizing the volume, location and flow of inventory.
  • Logistics: Move and warehouse product to serve a global market, fulfilling orders and satisfying customers with the service they need while also driving efficiency in transportation.
  • Sourcing: Partners with the business to generate competitive advantages through the creation of optimized supply bases which drive a culture of quality, supply reliability and competitive cost throughout the business. Critical components include supplier identification, management and development to enable an optimum supply chain performance.
  • Engineering: Improves the performance of manufacturing through the innovative application of technologies, processes and methods to product design and production. We drive the ongoing use of a lean continuous improvement mentality, partner with R&D on new product development, and standardize our operations program management to focus on value improvement and global transformation opportunities while customer needs.​

Employee Health & Safety, Security and Facilities (EHS)

All Smiths Group businesses have environmental, health and safety management systems in place to support the overall Group EHS goals including aggressive environmental reduction targets.

The EHS, Security & Facilities team is responsible for leading the organization to provide a safe and healthy working environment for its:

  • Employees
  • Visitors
  • Contractors
  • Members of the public

Smiths consistently implements best practices to reduce its environmental footprint. Being certified to ISO14001/OHSAS18001 for the larger sites and having comprehensive procedures and policies in place for the smaller sites minimizes EHS risks.

Global R&D

Smiths Medical Research and Development delivers innovative technology that improves the lives of patients. R&D is focused on developing breakthrough innovations in the areas of biocompatibility, nanotechnology, digitization, and security across the Infusion, Vital Care & Specialty, and Vascular Access business units.

R&D is responsible for:

  • Understanding and promoting the sciences that power the products we innovate.
  • Product ideation, development, and validation.
  • Ensuring quality and efficacy of products meets standards and exceeds expectations.
  • Improving outcomes for patients.
  • Generating intellectual property.
  • Cultivating and promoting talent to improve effectiveness and efficiencies in all we do.

Global Quality and Regulatory (GQR)

Global Quality and Regulatory (GQR) ensures Smiths Medical has the right tools, training, and processes in place to drive continuous quality excellence. The team works to maintain compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, and ensure the right products are in the right markets with the correct authorizations.

GQR has five core functions:

  • Business Unit Quality oversees quality in product design, voice of customer, franchise risk management and quality systems, product monitoring, and service quality.
  • Quality Operations manages manufacturing quality across global sites, service centers, franchises and capabilities.
  • Quality Services offers project management, training and business systems.
  • Regulatory, Compliance and Quality Systems oversees product submissions, registrations, listings and approvals, as well as clinical support, compliance, and quality systems.
  • Supplier Quality manages supplier development, monitoring, supplier audits, and Supplier Corrective Action Requests (SCARs).

Human Resources

Human Resources (HR) enables organization excellence by creating and delivering innovative programs that attract, engage, inspire, develop and retain world-class employees.

The HR team is organized into three primary areas that work together to achieve excellence:

  • HR Business Partners – Create and execute talent plans that align to the overall business and functional strategies. Advise leaders on all HR areas including, talent acquisition, talent planning, talent development, total rewards, communications, employee relations, organization design and leadership effectiveness.
  • HR Centers of Expertise - Develop and implement best-in-class programs for talent development, talent acquisition, total rewards, and corporate communications
  • The HR Service Center – Provides HR system and process support as well as employee service.


The upstream and downstream Marketing teams at Smiths Medical work closely with all functional areas of the business such as, R&D, Sales, and Operations to provide leadership and direction for all of the product portfolios, as well as go-to-market strategic and tactical plans responding to the needs of the four business units of Infusion Systems, Vital Care, Vascular Access, and Specialty.

Global Sales' vision of delighting customers in all things empowers the team to focus on the patient. All members of the Global Sales team are actively engaged in excellence practices and programs to grow and learn in their careers, including leadership development, progression planning, territory and pipeline management, training and product education. 

Smiths Group Legal

Legal supports every facet of Smiths Group, and identifies and manages legal risks across its six corporate divisions. Worldwide, Smiths Group operates in continuously changing and complex markets that require legal guidance for marketing, international trade, insurance, local employment laws, and corporate governance, among other functions. Legal supports commercial endeavours from sales to procurement to strategic partnerships, protects and enforces intellectual property rights, and seeks to achieve best outcomes in litigation.

Business Information Systems

Smiths Business Information Services, commonly known as "BIS," is Smiths Group's internal IT organisation. It is a separate legal and organizational entity from the five other Smiths divisions.

BIS is responsible for all aspects of IT service support for the Group's business divisions and the corporate center:

  • The delivery of all day to day IT services.
  • The development of new IT solutions & services.
  • Enable an information based decision making culture & facilitate the creation of value.

BIS has four primary areas of focus:

  • The shaping and delivery of projects within the Smiths IT project portfolio;
  • The delivery of day-to-day IT operational and support services;
  • The development of plans and strategies for the most effective deployment and use of IT for business advantage;
  • Helping colleagues protect the company's information assets.
